Solidarity Groups
About the Solidarity Groups
Since 2011 LEFI has continued to find women and girls living with fistula and connect them with life transforming surgical care.
Through the Patient linkage component, 2,303 Fistula Patients have been found and linked with Surgical Treatment opportunities.
From LEFI’s internal survey, over 80% of fistula survivors are unable to reintegrate in their communities even after successful surgical care following the psychological, economic and social consequences of living with Fistula.
It is this gap in Fistula Care Continuum that LEFI bridges by providing supportive structures and opportunities for Fistula Survivors to rebuild their lives for smooth and successful reintegration.
Fistula survivors are scattered across LEFI’s regions of operation, making it challenging to support each woman effectively on an individual basis.
In response, LEFI came up with Solidarity Groups as a transformative vehicle for reintegration work.
These groups offer women with lived experience a safe space to share their personal journeys and become a source of strength and support for one another. The model has proven to be highly effective and impactful, thanks to its community-led, culturally relevant approach, cost-efficiency, and—most importantly—its focus on placing power in the hands of women.
Through participation, survivors gain a profound sense of ownership and agency, which is revolutionizing their recovery and reintegration. Moreover, these Solidarity Groups have evolved into an unstoppable movement, boldly advocating against social injustices, harmful cultural practices, and dysfunctional systemic and economic structures that contribute to maternal deaths and complications such as obstetric fistula.
LEFI has supported the formation and establishment of 39 Solidarity Groups that supports the Reintegration of 833 Fistula Survivors. Beneficiaries meet twice a month to support one another and actively engage in both group and individual income-generating activities (IGAs).
To ensure the success and sustainability of these IGAs, LEFI provides comprehensive support—including mentorship, capacity building, technical assistance, and the provision of seed funding—empowering the women to start and manage profitable ventures.
The Solidarity Groups engage in a variety of group-based income-generating activities (IGAs), including:
● Table banking
● Merry-go-round savings schemes
● Animal husbandry
● Small-scale farming
● Small entreprises
These activities not only enhance the groups’ financial resilience but also strengthen solidarity and collaboration among members.
Through these activities, the Solidarity Groups have collectively achieved a net worth of KES 19,246,891 (approximately $148,912), demonstrating the power of women coming together and the significant economic empowerment gained through collective action.
